PM Modi's BMW High Security Edition

BMW 760Li High Security Edition

The Head of the State or Prime Minister of India uses a BMW High Security Edition 760Li as his official transporter, which is a tank disguised as a limousine. Although he preaches ‘Make in India’ he cannot travel in any other indigenous made car (Mahindra Scorpio) as the car was selected by SPG (Special Protection Group) which has certain prescribed standards for safety and security of the cars that are going to ferry the PM.

Since the security of the PM lies in the hands of the Special protection Group (SPG), M&M had to go through them first. The SPG, on the other hand, were happy with the BMW High Security Edition 7-Series 760Li, which has been doing its duty as the official transporter of the PM of India for long now.

Here’s the reasons why SPG rejected Mahindra Scorpio and decided to go with BMW Security Edition 760i as PM Modi’s official transporter

Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan is the chief guest of honour at India’s 68th Republic Day celebrations.

Lower Stance

First reason is that, even after the modifications it was not considered safe by the SPG, as the Scorpio has a very high stance, and it would be an easy target for snipers as it would stand out among the surrounding BMW X5’s which carry the SPG men. The BMW 7-Series on the other hand is low-stance car which is adequately protected from a direct shot by surrounding cars(X5’s). Also, a car with lower ground clearance has it’s center of mass more closer to the ground. It responds quite faster to sudden changes in movement and is easier to control & maneuver in any critical situations.

More Powerful Engine

The BMW Security Edition 760Li is powered by a 5972cc V12 engine offering 544 bhp at 5250 rpm and 750 Nm torque at 1500-5000 rpm. The engine is mated with a 6-speed automatic transmission and can accelerate from 0 to 100 kmph in 6.1 seconds and reach a top speed of 210 kmph.

Safety Features and Ballistic Ratings

The car is fully certified with VR7 grade of ballistic protection and parts of it comply with a higher VR9 grade of protection as well. This means that the BMW 760Li High Security Edition is one of the safest vehicles in India (only the Mercedes Benz S-Guard offers VR9 ballistic rating). The cabin of the car can turn into a gas-safe chamber in case of a gas attack and is also equipped with a back-up oxygen tank. It has an armour plates beneath to withstand mines and bombs. It can run on flat tyres for several kilometres and possesses advanced heat sensors to provide protection from bombs and missiles.

Here’s some other Safety Features :

  • Protection from sniper shots.
  • Protection from assault rifles like AK-47, M4 and Etc.
  • Protection from rocket launchers.
  • Protection from hand grenades.
  • Protection from fuel tank explosion.
  • Protection from poisonous gas.
  • Protection from IEDs, bombs and missiles.

The BMW Security Edition 760Li is not the only BMW serving duty with the Government of India, while all the SPG personnel use the BMW X5 as the protection vehicle, running in the convoy of the PM. This makes it a compatible and easy to maintain vehicle for the SPG personnels, deployed as the security of the Prime Minister of India.

The BMW brand in itself is 100 years old and offers a trusted and reliable name, it’s due to the long relationship between the brand and the Indian Government that BMW is being used as a state transporter. The BMW 7-Series was first purchased during the time of former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee. It’s been almost 20 years now and since the existing 7-Series fleet already complied with security features laid down by the SPG, nobody bothered to change the vehicle.
