Linking driving licenses with Aadhaar card will put a brake on the distribution of multiple driving licenses under the same person’s name.
In a bid to bring an end the threat of multiple driving licenses being issued under the same person’s name, the central government is planning to link the driving license with Aadhaar card, Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said.
Speaking at the “ Digital Haryana Summit, 2017” Ravi Shankar Prasad said: “ I have already had a discussion with Mr. Nitin Gadkari, Minister of Road Transport & Highways in this regard and discussion with state ministries is yet to be conducted. The Aadhaar is a digital, not physical identity and a digital identity confirms the physical identity. The purpose of linking PAN with Aadhaar is to stop money laundering.
The process has already commenced to procure an entire database of driving licenses in the country to ensure that duplication of driving license is brought to an end. It will also help traffic police department in finding and suspending fake licenses. As the driving license duplication is a state subject, the Center is ready to encourage all state ministries to make it mandatory to link Aadhaar card with driving licenses and there will be a deadline in which, the driving licenses will be suspended of those who fail to link it.
Steps to making Aadhaar and driving license mandatory will help to eradicate the issue of duplicate vehicle registrations and driving licenses and also help to reduce the number of road accidents.
